Before heading to the store make sure you measure your refrigerator space. This will avoid the hassle of returning your purchase if it doesn’t quite fit into the space it needs to fit in at home. Measure the width and the height of the space in your kitchen where you plan on inserting your fridge. Remember to add a little clearance by adding a couple of inches to the width for easy opening and closing of refrigerator doors.

What type of fridges best suits your needs? There are four options to choose from:

top_mount_1Top Freezer

The top freezer is your basic and most common model and perhaps one of the fastest sold models at our store. This model dedicates the bottom two thirds for fresh food storage with the freezer unit sitting on top. If style isn’t much of a concern you’ll find some of your best bargains with this model. They also come in a wide variety of colors.
ge_bottom_freezerBottom Freezer

This model is the upside down version of the top freezer. It allows for easier upright access to your fresh food compartment without having to bend over forward. These models come with a slightly larger freezer space than the top freezer models and also a slightly higher price tag. There is also less variety of models to choose from. The image you see on the left is a GE bottom freezer.
side-by-sideSide By side

A side-by-side unit splits your fridge down the middle with frozen foods on the left and fresh foods on the right. This can make for a much more narrow freezer space so you should keep this in mind when choosing this style. Side by side units come in a variety of models and many of their features are aimed at saving space. They also require less clearance to open the doors– making them ideal for narrow kitchens. Due to the vertical split you will want to go with the widest model that you can fit into your kitchen.
french_doorFrench Door

The new popular fridge in town is the French Door Refrigerator. French door models are a combination of a drawer style bottom freezer and side-by-side doors for the fresh food compartment. The split of your fridge doors means you will be losing less cool air when opening one door to grab some milk. With this model you’ll definitely find a wide variety of options including models with smart features that you won’t find with other styles. This is also the most expensive model on the market with some very fancy add on features like LCD screens which raises the price tag a little higher.

How Big Of A Fridge Do You Need?

A general rule of thumb is you will want 4 to 6 cubic feet of refrigerator space per adult in your household. Full size refrigerators range from 10 to 32 cubic feet– meaning a family of four would require a 20 cubic feet or larger unit. Remember a bigger fridge means a bigger energy bill so splurging on extra space that you don’t need will cost you more in the long run.

Saving Energy! Saving Money | Great Energy Saver Tips

On average your appliances account for 17% of your homes total energy use. A couple of the biggest culprits are your home refrigerator and range. With a few simple tips and ideas you can help to reduce electricity and natural gas costs these appliances generate. Read on and remember to apply these tips for best results.Continue reading

[1] The recommended temperature for fresh foods is between 37 and 40 degrees and 0 to 5 degrees for frozen foods. You should periodically check the thermostat for accuracy. To do this you will need to check the temperature of your fridge by placing a thermometer in a glass of water in the fresh food compartment and a thermometer by itself in the freezer compartment. Leave these in place for 24 hours and remove. The temperature reading on these are an accurate reading and you can adjust your control dial accordingly.

[2] Older model refrigerators should be defrosted regularly. Don’t allow frost build up to exceed one quarter of an inch in thickness. Frost build up decreases the efficiency of the freezer.

[3] Test the door seals. These seals need to be air tight. Simply close the doors over a sheet of paper. If the paper falls or if you can pull it out easily then your seals may need replaced or your door latch may need to be adjusted. This assures no cool air is escaping.

[4] The average refrigerator lasts about 14 years. It might be time to consider purchasing a new energy efficient refrigerator.

RANGES

[5] Keep your range reflectors clean. This will help to reflect the heat more evenly which in turn will help you save money on your natural gas and electricity costs.

[6] Use a microwave or other small appliance whenever possible. They use much less energy than your range. Remember to cover foods you microwave to reduce radiation intake.

[7] If you are using a natural gas range you should watch for yellow colored flames. They indicate that gas is burning inefficiently. In that case you may need to make adjustments to the gas dispense valve which is usually located behind the oven.

Show Your Kitchen Appliances Some Love | They will Return the Favor

Once upon a time maintaining your kitchen appliances was not that important as long as they worked. But appliances have come a long way. If you show your kitchen appliances some love they will love you in return. With these simple tasks the affection can be mutual:Continue reading

Re-ignite The Flame With Your Fridge

man_in_the_kitchen_pouring_milkYour fridge is probably the most important and most needed appliance in your kitchen.  Doing your part can help it keep it working desirably. It’s important to load your fridge properly. Contents should be spread out evenly to assure even circulation of cool air. Take a load off your fridge by cleaning the coils. Not only does this keep it running smoothly, but it will also trim your utility bills which will definitely put a smile on your face. To do this you will need to unplug your fridge and remove any dust from the coils. A vacuum can help make this task much easier.

Smell the Love

Enjoy a pleasant smell from your garbage disposal. Never pour grease down your disposal. It causes build up which not only affects how it runs, but it will also remind you of last nights dinner. For an enjoyable smell, drop a handful of ice cubes down your disposal. Follow this with your favorite scent of lemon, lime or orange peels. Turn on the cold water along with your disposal and run both for 15-30 seconds. Rinse thoroughly with cold water.

Loving For Your Oven

Clean your reflectors under your burners. This helps to distribute the heat more evenly which, in turn, makes your stove run more efficiently. Remember, do not run the self cleaning cycle one to two weeks before a big dinner as that is when most ovens tend to fail.

Dishwasher My Darling

Once a month run one cup of white vinegar through an empty cycle to help remove soap scum. You can also run an empty dishwasher through a complete cycle without detergent to clean the walls of your dishwasher. If you don’t know if an item is dishwasher safe then hand wash it. This will prove to be much safer in the long run.

Following these simple tasks will result in a much happier love affair with your kitchen appliances.

The Benefit of Buying Scratch and Dent Appliances

If the thought of buying scratch and dent appliances leaves you nervous, continue reading and put your mind at ease. Many retailers have scratch and dent products available to consumers at a discount. These products range from missing parts to insignificant cosmetic mishaps. Appliances usually sustain scratches and dents during shipping or handling back and forth by manufacturers, but the main internal parts that keep these appliances running do not break 99.5% of the time.

4546.gas.range5If you purchase scratch and dent appliances from an appliance store it’s likely the product might still be under warranty. Warranty, as you very well know, comes in handy in case something goes wrong. The fact that an appliance has scratches and dents on it doesn’t mean anything. It’s still new and functions like new. Moreover, a misconception some consumers make is thinking they will not be able to return a scratch and dent appliance after purchase. That is not the case. Any customer friendly appliance store will offer good warranty to protect you.
Some consumers may stay away from appliances that are missing parts, but in doing so they may also be missing out on a great deal. An appliance can be significantly discounted if it is missing a part that could easily be replaced. This could mean huge savings. Always research the cost of replacing the part before passing on that scratch and dent appliance. The bottom line is that scratch and dent can make new appliances more affordable for those who might not otherwise be able to afford them. Nevertheless, remember to ask about return policy and warranty.

A memory foam mattress adjusts to the shape of your body by contouring to every spot on your body as you sleep. Therefore it provides consistent support. When you get up off the bed the foam returns to its original form. A memory foam mattress does not have springs or box springs. It is just a mattress. These mattresses are typically very expensive but with proper care they can last a lifetime.

Air Mattress

These are commonly used as a temporary bed typically for overnight guests. They can be inflated and deflated as needed with a portable air pump. Air mattresses are not meant to be used as a permanent bed as one tiny hole can destroy it making for numerous purchases.

Water Bed

These mattresses are less common today, but typically last about 8 years. These mattresses are basically a liner filled with water. They can be heated to provide extra warmth for those cold nights.

Adjustable Mattress

An adjustable mattress is a mattress with 2 remote controls. These controls allow you to adjust your side of the bed to the desired firmness of your choice without disturbing the other side

Innerspring Mattress

These are the most common mattresses in bedrooms today. Springs are placed inside these mattresses to support your body weight. These sit on top of a box spring. Innerspring mattresses come in numerous styles, patterns, thickness and with or without pillowtops. Unfortunately, they don’t last as long as some of the other styles of mattresses.
