Cloudy Glasses Give a Bad Impression | Clear Glasses Ahead

Do you love having guests over for dinner but cringe at the last minute over cloudy glasses? Have you had that embarrasing experience of having to change glasses in the middle of serving a drink. Let’s eliminate those milky glasses and also get a better understanding of what causes the milky film in the first place.Continue reading

Let’s start by explaining that as a July 2011, all detergent makers were forced to remove phosphates from their detergents after 17 states completely banned the use of them. Phosphate played a very important role in detergents. They helped the detergent clean better, especially in areas with hard water. Phosphate is the ingredient that breaks food down and dissolves it by removing calcium that binds food together. It also breaks down grease during the wash cycle which reduces spotting and filming.

Here are a few tips to help get rid of those spots up:

1-      When using dishwasher, always match the name brand of rinse agent with your brand of detergent. The makers of these products use chemicals to enhance one another.

2-      Use a product with citric acid at least twice a month. Citric acid helps to release deposits that attach to your dishwashers internal mechanisms and allow them to be removed during the drain cycle.

3-      Always make sure the water temperature is at least 125 degrees.

Remember if any of your dishes already have a white film on them, some advanced dishwasher may work wonders to get rid of it, but generally most dishwashers are not able to remove it. You will want to soak these in a white vinegar and warm water bath for at least 30 minutes and then hand wash.

Dishwasher Blues | Get Your Dishwashers Working Better

Have you ever started unloading your dishwasher only to realize your dishes were still dirty? Not only is this frustrating, but it’s also time consuming and costs more when you have to run the dishwasher for another cycle. Whether it’s an old one or a brand new, there are a few things you can do to help eliminate the problem.Continue reading

Start by cleaning the inside walls: Grease, food, soap and calcium deposits have a tendency to build up on the walls. Solutions for this are as simple as running your dishwashers while empty and without detergent once a month or by filling your dishwasher with approximately 2 inches of water then adding a cup of white vinegar and finish running it through the cycle.

Clean the drain. Food and debri can get stuck in the drain. Make sure the drain is clear. Clean it if necessary. If you have a garbage disposal remember that it shares the same drain. Always run the disposal prior to running the dishwasher to clear out any food.

Are you using the right amount of detergent? Using too much detergent can cause residue to stick to your dishes resulting in the need to re-wash them.  However, using too little leaves you with unclean dishes. One solution is to purchase tablet detergent that are pre-measured and contains a rinse aid. Simply drop the tablet into the detergent cavity.  You can find these at most stores. If you need help determining the proper amount of detergent for your machine, consult your owners manual.

Water temperature plays an important role.  A simple test to check your water temperature is to turn on your kitchen water spout. The amount of time it takes for your water to heat up is the same amount of time it takes heat up in your dishwasher. This could mean your dishwasher could be struggling at the beginning of the cycle. For best cleaning results try to run your dishwasher at a time when no other hot water is being used in your home.

The sprayer arm has one of the most important jobs of your dishwasher. Take special care of it. When loading your dishwasher make sure to avoid placing long utensils in the sprayer arms path. If blocked the sprayer arm won’t be able to rotate properly thus, not doing its job. The holes of the sprayer arm can be a victim of calcium build up blocking the water from spraying properly. A strong toothpick inserted into the holes will unblock them.

Denis |Stillwater, NY awarded this fridge 5 out of 5 stars based on performance, quality features, appearance and value. He said his veggies had never stayed so fresh. He also praised how spacious it was and liked the dispenser too.

Jeff | Florida is also a big fan of the GE French door and liked the features on it, but he thought the noise level was a bit too high and the fan run consistently even if the refrigerator was seldom opened. (I think this is something GE engineers need to pay attention to.)

Importance of Using Surge Protectors for Home Appliances

The average household spends thousands of dollars on appliances and electronics. Yet most appliance owners neglect one very important aspect of appliances and that is to protect them from unexpected power surges or voltage spikes. A simple solution for this is to plug them into a surge protector, but not just any one. Be very picky when choosing one.Continue reading

electric_plug_sucketPower surges are unpredictable and can be damaging to appliances that aren’t protected. Therefore, the use of surge protectors is becoming more and more commonplace in homes today. Sudden power outages can be very damaging to appliances and electronics.

It was with this in mind that surge protectors were invented. These gadgets follow certain protocol of powering on or shutting down to prevent damage to the internal operating systems of your electronic appliances. They protect them in one of two different ways– either by blocking the excess voltage or shortens ground excess voltage.

Source of Unexpected Power Surge

The most common cause of a power surge is lightning. When lightning strikes close to a power line it increases the electrical flow by millions of volts. A regular surge protector would be useless if this happens and any electrical devices that you have plugged in would be fried in a split second. There are several different levels of surge protectors depending on how much protection you want. You can buy protection for under $20, but you get what you pay for. There are 3 main types of protectors: basic, advanced and stations. The basic has five or six outlets and your protection is moderate. Advanced strips filter voltage spikes better than basic strips but won’t prevent all electric surges. It will filter electricity smoother. Surge stations are the best of all three. They provide the most protection. You will have to determine what level of protection you want. Most consumer electronics stores sell a wide assortment of power surge strips. Talk with a professional to determine which protector will work better for you in protecting your appliances and electronics.———–

Is Your Dryer Drying as Fast as It Should?

If your dryer isn’t drying your clothes as fast as it used to then it’s time for a thorough cleaning. It’s important to keep your dryer running at top speed. Not only does this save energy, but it assures that your clothes are dried in the least amount of time possible. A few simple steps performed on a regular basis can help to achieve this and possibly avoid expensive repairs down the road. Continue reading

picture_of_front_load_washerCheck and clean the lint filter after every use: Just as your eyelids block most dust particles from getting into your eyes so does the lint filter block lint from clogging your dryer. If the filter is ripped or torn, replace it. Another common problem is when the filter gets clogged with fabric softner residues. This can be cleaned with a soft bristle brush and detergent.

Check the inside of the dryer cabinet for built up lint: Most lint produced by clothes are generally caught in a lint trap. Sometimes the lint escapes and builds up on the inside of the dryer cabinet. At least once a year you should check the cabinet and clean it if needed. Heavy use of the dryer means a more frequent check.

Check your vent pipe for lint build up: You should check the entire length of the vent pipe. Also remove the lint from the duct. Pushing it back into the dryer can lead to it clogging your vent. You can purchase a vent cleaning brush to help clean the lint up.

Check the chute that holds the lint filter in place: The edge of a vacuum cleaner tube fits well into the chute and remove lint from those hard to reach places. Sometimes the lint build up is so severe that a professional appliance repair technician should be called to avoid the risk of injuring yourself or damaging the dryer.

These simple tips can help to keep your dryer running smoothly and your clothes drying faster.

Laundry Tips you Can Use at Home

It is something you don’t want out in the open but you wear them in the open. What is it? If you answered ‘dirty laundry,’ you are right. Here are a few laundry tips you can use at home and also recommend to others. Do you know how to dry your clothes faster without touching your dryer settings? Do you know simple habits to avoid to prevent your washer from breaking down? Here are a few tips you can use that’s proven to be very effective….Continue reading

laundry.tips.for.your.homeSOME USEFUL LAUNDRY TIPS:

[1] Avoid stuffing your washer with excessive amount of clothes. Two things usually occur as a result of this: [a] Your stained clothes will not be properly washed. Clothes stained with oil or other similar stubborn liquids may still show the stain marks after washing and drying. I don’t know about you, but I really hate that. [b] Stuffing your washer excessively can also overwork the agitator in the washer that beats out the dirt. A breakdown could occur easily. [2] Okay this second tip only applies to men who do laundry. It’s a very simple one–separate the white clothes from the colored ones to avoid discoloring your white clothes! Sometimes scrambled white and colored clothes come out okay, but after some time, the white ones looses that bright glow color. [3] Check your pockets for papers, pens, markers, and the like. You will not be a happy person when you start taking those clothes out to dry them and you find out such things were hidden in them. [4] I usually recommend liquid detergents for a good wash. The powdered ones don’t often dissolve well and sometimes get trapped somewhere in the clothes. [5] If you can afford it, get a high efficiency washer. These types of appliances use energy and water very economically and still produce desired outcomes. [6] To conserve energy, use hot or warm water for washing and use cold water for rinsing. [7] Use a ”gentle wash settings” for fragile clothing like nylon.

TIPS FOR Drying your clothes:

[1] Before transferring your water squeezed wet clothes, take each one out, spread them and shake them up well. Don’t place them inside the dryer in bulky shapes. [2] See that your clothes aren’t too soaked with water. Make sure they get a good spin in the washer. Once you transfer your wet clothes to your dryer, add about 2 dry towels in there, set and hit the start button. The dry towels will absorb water to help speed up the drying process. [3] Silks don’t need much heat to dry so set the temperature to medium or low. [4] Always check your lint filter and clean it out before drying. Link filers a placed where they’re quite easy to remove and replace back again. Try these laundry tips and recommend them to others at home to avoid laundry dissapointemts. You are welcome to comment on this blog if you have any additional tips to add.

Let’s Talk Ovens | Get ’em Ready for the Holidays

It’s that time of year. Time for family, friends and some entertainment.  As you prepare your house for your gathering, don’t forget to give your oven a little TLC. Doing this will help you spend as little time in the kitchen as possible and more time enjoying your guests. With a few easy tips from your friends at The Appliance and Mattress Center of Columbus, Ohio you can give your oven a facelift.Continue reading

HOLIDAY TIPS FOR CLEANING OUT YOUR OVEN

image_of_nice_baked_bread_in_ovenSchedule your cleaning up to two weeks before the big day. Ovens have a higher tendency of failing during or soon after a self-cleaning cycle.

Clean and remove the black leftover spills. Doing this will help you to avoid filling your house with unpleasant odors.

Check for moisture on the outside of your oven. If you find moisture you may have a faulty gasket. These gaskets maintain proper cooking temperatures. Therefore, faulty gaskets should always be replaced.

Is your oven baking efficiently? You can be assured of this by checking to see if the temperature on your dial matches the temperature inside your oven. You can check this with a digital oven thermometer. If you don’t have access to one of these you can also check it by buying a basic white cake mix and following the directions on the box exactly. If the cake comes out dry or undercooked, your oven temperature isn’t correct and will need to be adjusted. To do this, you will need to remove the oven temperature-control knob. On many ovens you will find either a dial under the knob that tells you how to reset the temperature or the disc under the knob. Follow the manufactures directions printed there. If no directions given you will need to loosen the screw and move the disc counterclockwise to raise the temperature or clockwise to lower it. Each notch on the disc represents a 10 degree change. Adjust the gauge accordingly. Replace the knob. Wait till the oven cools down completely and recheck your temperature using one of the two ways mentioned above.

Rather than opening oven door while baking, use your oven light to take a peek inside. This will save cooking time and energy as your heat won’t escape. If your light isn’t work the bulb could be faulty and needs to be changed or you may need to have a professional check the connection.

By following these simple tips you can avoid a disruptive cooking at your gathering. Happy baking from all of us at The Appliance and Mattress Center!

Mattress Cleaning Tips | Get Rid of Bed Bugs

I have read some blogs about mattress cleaning tips which covered various interesting areas, but in this blog, I will discuss a few steps you can take to get a mattress and box spring very well cleaned. None of these will help you if you do not actually put them to practice so make a decision to try them. If you do not have the time, pick a weekend and get your husband and the kids together for a mattress/ box spring cleaning day.Continue reading

clean.mattress.bedbugsDangers of Using Filthy Mattresses

There are several harmful germs, bugs and bacteria that may use your mattress as a breeding hot spot if the environment is just right. Some germs do great during warm seasons. They can reproduce very quickly as a result of that. I also read one article that said the skin of one person sheds over 9 million bacteria daily. You can guess exactly where a significant number of this bacteria end up. Other problems that can arise as a result of using dirty mattresses include asthma, allergies, and possibly skin rashes. There is always that risk of bed bugs too. For these reasons it will help to consider the mattress cleaning tips listed in steps right below.

Steps for Cleaning Your Mattress and Box Spring

[Step 1] Start by removing the covers and washing them and, if the weather permits, bring your mattress outside to the backyard or the front of the house. Lean it against a wall then grab a belt or something like it and hit the mattress all over for about 10 minutes. This can help significantly in removing lots of cornered dust and some invisible skin bacteria that may have accumulated. Turn it and do the exact same thing. Don’t forget the sides too and always remember to wear something to cover your nose.

[Step 2] After that grab a vacuum cleaner and, with the extra small mouth extension, vacuum every part of the mattress. Pay attention to the seams and tough corners.

[Step 3] When that is done, gently spray all sides of your mattress with Lysol disinfectant spray and leave for about 15 minutes for the disinfectant to work.  Steps 2 and 3 can be performed on the box spring also. It’s quite easy for germs and bacteria to get down there too.

[Step 4] For added security, apply some baking soda on the mattress and let it for a while. This step is optional but helpful. Also, the hot rays of the sun alone can help take down moisture loving bacteria or germs.

[Step 5] Lastly, beat the mattress a little more and bring it back in. If you are a guy, I know you can’t resist doing this step one more time.

Give it a try

It might seem like quite some work but it is worth it because [1] it can help prevent you from getting sick and sharing it with the family and [2] you only need to do this just once in a while not every week. Again none of these will mean anything if you do not put these tips to use. So see if there is time this weekend, gather the kids, call her and try these useful mattress cleaning tips.
